Those Toxic Chemicals Don’t Vanish

Chemwash killing eels

Chemwash Hamilton was fined $39,000. The guts of the story is that Chemwash Hamilton was hired to clean a Paeroa retirement home and let the waste from the wash discharge into the stormwater drain. This discharged into the river causing a number of dead fish and eels.

Knowing a little about chemicals and the company involved I suspect ‘environmentally friendly’ was a word used to describe these chemicals.

Clearly this was not the case.

If they’d used Xtreme Clean in the wash the wouldn’t have been able to happen. But they didn’t, they elected to use a cheaper chemical, and were “completely inadequate” at taking steps to prevent the discharge.
